I watched an interview of Ten Dinning from 2023 and jotted down some notes.
This was during the time I had begun my online writing journey for the umpteenth time and was determined to do things right. I searched high and low for educational resources to improve my skillset not only as a writer, but essentially as a solopreneur as well.
Ten Dinning wasn’t someone I was familiar with prior to his ‘Top Writer’ interview, but his knowledge of the digital publishing landscape was apparent.
This is what I learned:
Platforms like X (Twitter), LinkedIn, Medium, Substack, and Convert Kit are great for writers.
According to Ten, ‘X’ is great for traffic, Medium is publication, and Substack is distribution. This highlights the importance of the average writer needing to operate as an entrepreneur for success. Being an entrepreneurial writer means leveraging the benefits of each site. Writers are advised to build email lists, sell email courses, and write books.
Since Ten’s interview, there has been a noticeable decline in Medium engagement across the site, but his opinion on viral popular topics still rings true.
Topics such as self-help, travel, productivity, economy, crypto, history, and marketing will always catch the attention of readers. Why? Because there are three areas of life people will always have to deal with: relationships, finances, and personal development. We’re in the era of authenticity. People don’t need anymore false hope. They need to “see it” to “believe it,” and if you can write about the processes, building your online personal brand as a writer becomes almost effortless.
Another part of Ten’s interview that I enjoyed was his breakdown of LinkedIn and how to take advantage of the platform.
LinkedIn has high organic reach, an unspoken code of professionalism at all times (it’s basically workplace culture), six figure customers, it’s the best place to sell — especially a service, and everyone’s there for business. Learning this was a huge eye opener because most people go straight for the Instagram Ads after launching their products or services. Rarely do you hear people being advised to network on LinkedIn. And honestly, I think LinkedIn doesn’t get as much credit as other social media platforms simply because it requires a level of professionalism some people aren’t willing to adhere to.
Nevertheless, each platform mentioned in this article is an avenue for revenue.
Revenue isn’t always a monetary thing. Your network is your net worth. Even if you don’t get paid the first time you create an educational email course for a client via Convert Kit, the results of your work can inspire a paid opportunity either from that person directly or a referral. Being a writer in its essence is about getting people to read what you write. The more you can show people what you know, the easier it becomes to be trusted and invested in — whether it’s through direct sells or services.
